How to Prevent Premature Bearing Failure

Five practical checks that reduce heat, vibration, contamination and early bearing damage in industrial equipment.

Deep groove ball bearings are often the first choice for electric motors, pumps, fans and general machinery. They are compact, widely available and capable of carrying radial load with a moderate amount of axial load. But the right choice depends on more than bore size.\n\nStart with the load. Record radial load, axial load and whether either changes during operation. If the application has heavy combined loads, a different bearing type may be a better fit.\n\nNext, check speed and temperature. Higher speed increases heat and makes lubrication more important. Choose a clearance class and lubricant that match the operating temperature, fit and expected speed.\n\nEnvironment matters too. In a clean, dry motor, an open or shielded bearing may work well. In dusty or wet conditions, sealed bearings can protect the grease and raceways.\n\nFinally, confirm dimensions and mounting details: bore, outside diameter, width, shaft tolerance and housing tolerance. A correct part number is useful, but it is not a substitute for checking the whole application. Send your drawing or operating conditions to a bearing supplier if you need support with selection.
