Open, ZZ or 2RS Bearings: Choosing the Right Seal

Choosing the right bearing seal is a trade-off between protection, speed and friction. The familiar options are open bearings, ZZ shields and 2RS rubber seals. Each one suits a different operating environment.\n\nOpen bearings work well in clean, protected housings where regular lubrication is practical. They create the least friction, but they offer almost no protection from dust, moisture or process debris.\n\nZZ bearings use metal shields on both sides. They keep out larger particles while maintaining relatively low friction. They are often a sensible choice for clean electric motors, fans and light industrial equipment. Shields are not designed for water washdown or fine abrasive dust.\n\n2RS bearings use contact rubber seals. They give much better protection against contamination and help retain grease, which makes them useful in conveyor systems, agricultural equipment and general machinery exposed to dirty conditions. The seal adds friction, so high-speed applications should be checked carefully.\n\nBefore selecting a seal, look at the real environment: contamination, washdown, temperature, shaft speed and maintenance access. A bearing that is slightly more expensive at purchase can cost much less if it prevents an early shutdown.
